MARCH 22, 2025 -- The pattern has been active through the middle of March with multiple waves of severe storms and A LOT of rain.

Sunday will be no different as another Spring-time system tracks across the Midwest. We'll start with a wave of showers and thunderstorms late Saturday night and into Sunday morning. Severe storms are not expected in the morning round, but pockets of very heavy rain, lightning, and small hail is possible.

Around lunchtime on Sunday, there should be a lull in rain and storms as the warm front lifts north of our region. There will be a surge of warmer, more humid air tracking north into Southern Illinois during the afternoon hours. This could lead to a little instability developing, especially in far Southern Illinois near the Ohio River. As the cold front crashes into the area during the mid to late afternoon, additional storms are expected to develop. A few could be on the strong side with hail and isolated damaging winds. Any storms that develop will quickly track south into Kentucky after 5 p.m. 0.50-1.00" of rainfall is expected across much of the region on Sunday.

In addition to the rain and the storm risk, strong winds will be possible during the afternoon on Sunday, especially south of the warm front. Gusts over 30 miles per hour from the south are possible.

In the wake of the cold front, COOLER air will once again filter into the region. By Monday, a few areas will likely be starting the day back into the upper 30s. The breeze form the northwest will add a little chilly to the air Monday afternoon, but temperatures look to still bounce back into the mid 60s.

Most of the week is fairly quiet. Temperatures Tuesday will push back near 70-degrees, but another weak cold front moves through the area Tuesday evening, sliding afternoon temperatures back to 60s Wednesday and Thursday.

As we draw closer to the end of the month, there is once again a signal for potential strong systems to track across the Central U.S. It's still over a week away, but it is something to keep a close eye on.

GARDENERS: I think it's possible that we've experienced the last freeze of the season, but I would urge you to continue holding off for another few weeks before planting. There are no signs of impending cold weather, but the second week of April is typically the time that I would start thinking that we're most likely in the clear. I know we get to that point in the year where we get anxious to get things in the ground, but I would always urge patience.
